Occupational Therapy

The Role of an Occupational Therapist

Supporting Everyday Independence

Occupational Therapists (OTs) help people of all ages develop the skills they need to participate meaningfully in everyday life. “Occupation” doesn’t just mean work — it includes all the daily activities that give life purpose, from getting dressed, eating, and learning, to playing, socialising, and engaging in hobbies.

What Does an OT Do?

Occupational Therapists take a holistic approach to supporting individuals. We look at the person, their environment, and the activities they want or need to do. By understanding how these areas interact, we help identify what’s getting in the way of participation and create strategies to overcome those barriers.

For children, that might mean supporting development in:

  • Sensory regulation Helping children understand and respond to sensory input in a calm, organised way.
  • Fine and gross motor skills Developing strength, coordination, and dexterity for tasks like handwriting, dressing, and play.
  • Attention and emotional regulation Improving focus, impulse control, and coping skills.
  • Social and play skills Building the ability to share, take turns, and connect with others

For adults, OTs may assist with:

  • Rehabilitation after injury or illness
  • Adapting home or work environments to improve safety and independence
  • Managing fatigue, chronic pain or sensory challenges
  • Developing strategies for daily living and community participation

How OTs Make a Difference

OTs empower individuals to live more independently, confidently, and joyfully. Every session is tailored to the person’s unique goals — whether that’s a child learning to tie their shoes, a teen managing anxiety at school, or an adult recovering their daily routines after injury.

By combining creativity, clinical expertise, and compassion, OTs support people in building the skills and confidence to thrive in everyday life.
