Allied Health Assistance

The Role of an Allied Health Assistant

Supporting Therapy & Everyday Progress

Allied Health Assistants (AHAs) work closely with qualified therapists to help clients achieve their goals through consistent, hands-on support. They play a key role in carrying out therapy programs, reinforcing skill development, and supporting daily practice in fun, meaningful ways.

What Does an Allied Health Assistant Do?

An Allied Health Assistant supports the work of professionals such as Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologists, Physiotherapists, Psychologists, and Behaviour Support Practitioners. Under the guidance of these clinicians, AHAs deliver tailored activities and exercises designed to help clients build confidence and independence.

For children and young people, an Allied Health Assistant may:

  • Run therapy-based play sessions that support motor, communication, or sensory goals.
  • Assist with skill practice such as handwriting, speech exercises, or coordination tasks.
  • Encourage participation through positive reinforcement and engaging routines.
  • Support emotional regulation and focus during therapy activities.
  • Collaborate with therapists and families to ensure consistency across home, school, and therapy environments.

For adults, AHAs may assist with:

  • Communication or memory support activities as recommended by Speech Pathologists or Psychologists.
  • Daily living skill practice, such as cooking, shopping, or community access.
  • Exercise or mobility routines to maintain strength and function.
  • Rehabilitation programs following injury or illness.
  • Progress monitoring, sharing observations with supervising therapists to guide next steps.

How Allied Health Assistants Make a Difference

Allied Health Assistants help bridge the gap between therapy sessions and daily life. By reinforcing strategies in practical settings, they ensure therapy is consistent, effective, and meaningful. Their supportive, person-centred approach helps clients gain confidence and make steady progress toward their goals.

Whether it’s a child learning new motor skills or an adult regaining independence after an injury, AHAs play a vital role in helping people turn therapy goals into real-world success.
