Behaviour Support

The Role of a Behaviour Support Practitioner

Encouraging Positive Behaviour & Meaningful Change

Behaviour Support Practitioners work alongside individuals, families, and support teams to understand the reasons behind challenging behaviours and to promote positive, respectful, and effective strategies for change. Their goal is to enhance quality of life by building skills, improving communication, and creating supportive environments where individuals can thrive.

What Does a Behaviour Support Practitioner Do?

Behaviour Support Practitioners use a person-centred and evidence-based approach to understand each individual’s unique needs. They focus on identifying the function of a behaviour — what the person is trying to communicate or achieve — and then develop strategies that reduce distress and encourage positive alternatives.

For children and young people, Behaviour Support may include:

  • Understanding triggers for emotional or behavioural outbursts
  • Developing positive behaviour strategies to replace unsafe or challenging behaviours
  • Supporting emotional regulation and teaching calming techniques
  • Building communication and social skills to reduce frustration and increase connection
  • Collaborating with families, teachers, and therapists to create consistent, supportive routines

For adults, Behaviour Support can assist with:

  • Managing behaviours of concern in daily life, home, or community settings.
  • Improving independence and participation through skill-building and structured routines.
  • Enhancing communication and choice-making.
  • Training and empowering support teams to respond effectively and compassionately.
  • Developing Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) plans that are practical, safe, and aligned with NDIS requirements.

How Behaviour Support Practitioners Make a Difference

Behaviour Support Practitioners work with empathy and understanding — focusing on the person behind the behaviour. By addressing underlying needs and teaching alternative skills, they reduce behaviours of concern while enhancing wellbeing, inclusion, and self-determination.

Every plan is designed collaboratively, ensuring families and support teams feel confident and equipped to help the individual succeed in all settings.
